Main goal Craftdesign: An International platform for "Craftdesign" The goal of this event is: To give furniture- and object design, say, Craftdesign more possibilities and make it better known internationally. We have the opinion that Craftdesign is a new discipline in design that needs to be communicated broadly, nationally and internationally, because of its neglected position compared to other disciplines. World-wide 5 European countries, Great-Britain, Belgium, Denmark, Finland and the Netherlands are leading in the field of Craftdesign. Graduation-projects from universities from these countries form the basis of this event. It has appeared that an increasing number of object/furniture designers produce their work independently; meanwhile there are less and less possibilities, nationally and internationally, to exhibit (communicate) under good conditions. Structure of Craftdesign: The structure of this event has been built up in 5 years time. It consists of approaching designers, the logistic problem, the actual exhibition and publicity activities (newspapers, publishing on the Internet). The quality of object/furniture design in the participating countries is a guaranty for a high standard. Other criteria for participation are the graduation-standards of the individual academies. The participants are easily accessible through their academies and their graduation exhibitions. A network has already been established in Great-Britain, Denmark, Belgium and The Netherlands. Transport is provided over land with a professional furniture container that is loaded and unloaded on a gathering-point. Designers don't have to be present at the exhibition. The positioning and safeguarding of the work during the exhibition is done by a group of enthusiastic volunteers, who have done this 5 times already. The presentation is in a hall 4000m2 wide as part of an interior-decorating fair. Further: The event "Craftdesign" represents a world-wide upcoming movement. If you want to signal "Craftdesign" as a new development, you will have to show her quality and possibilities. It does not suffice to select national or bilateral because at least 5 European countries are leading in this field. Not all countries are a member of the European monetary union, but this should not be a selection criterion. It is special that the world top has developed in Europe and it is important for the designers and for the public to see these countries together in one exhibition. Apart from unification, cultural identity and cultural awareness are pillars of the European community. This event makes a considerable contribution to these aims. Why avant-garde: It is a new development, which designers produce under their own direction. A counterbalance is formed against the superficiality of mass production. People will realize more and more that their interiors need personal elements. An event of this extent moves something in people. The visitor enters the hall and feels like he is landed on Mars, while the objects exhibited, could be made by a neighbour or close relative. This unfamiliarity with Craftdesign is caused by the abominable sale and exhibition possibilities. Hardly anywhere in the world are locations where a designer can exhibit his work if he is not already famous. The people from all over the world that visit our gallery in Amsterdam state that no such place exists anywhere else in the world. The contacts we have through the event "Craftdesign" confirm this. Inspired by "Craftdesign" small-scale initiatives are developing in Malmo and London. |
